20s & 30s Conference '20: Talk 2 The Power of Cross-shaped Love with Santosh Thomas

How can we be a force of good in the world? Santosh Thomas opens up John 13: 31-38 and explores how Jesus' first disciples are taught to love one another as Jesus has loved them and how we an do that as churches in a world full of darkness.

Talk Outline:

1. Jesus was heading for glory! v31-33

2. Disciples are called to love one another as Jesus has loved us! v34-35

3. Even the strongest disciple will fail Jesus v36-38

Discussion Questions:

1. What do we naturally think will attract our friends and neighbours to Jesus?

2. How does Jesus’ command in v34-35 challenge or inspire you?

3. What are some of the dangers of interpreting ‘love one another’ just to suit our personal or desires or cultural norms? How does ‘as I have loved you’ clarify what this really means?

4. How practically can we love one another in this Christlike cross-shaped way at the moment? What might be some of the barrier in our hearts and minds?

5. How does the example of Peter (v36-38) challenge or encourage us? Given how tough the past few months have been, how might we encourage one another when we fail and let Jesus down? Are our relationships deep enough to do this honestly?

6. What one thing would we like to take away and put into practice from this weekend. How practically will we encourage one another to be do-ers and not just hearers of the word? "

20s & 30s Conference '20: Talk 1 The Paradox of the Cross with Santosh Thomas

What might look weak and pathertic, shines brightly into a dark world! Santosh Thomas opens up John 12: 13-26 to encourage us that even in this needy, broken, COVID 19 world, where death comes to us all, the way to glory comes through Jesus death on the cross.

Talk Outline:

1. Jesus’ death was NECESSARY to give life to the world v20-26

2. Jesus’ death was POWERFUL to overcome evil and draw all people to himself v27-33

3. Jesus’ death is URGENT to respond while there’s still time v34-36

Discussion questions

1. How does this passage encourage us at this time? Reflect together on what these verses show us about the effectiveness and result of Christ’s death. What difference might this make for us today?

2. How might this challenge our understanding of the Christian life? Is it really correct to expect that “the Christian life, which is the best life, looks and feels like death”? (v24-26)

3. What might ‘dying to self’ or ‘the way of the cross’ look like practically for us, individually and collectively, during this season? How can we encourage one another that this really is the best life?

4. Do we share Jesus’ urgency in v35-36? What would that look like realistically in practice?

Morning Service 10.45am 8 Dec '19 from Jesmond Parish Church, Newcastle UK

Today Jonathan Redfearn will be preaching on 'Christ Hates Hypocrisy' from Luke 20: 41-47.

Some of Jesus' most condemning words in the gospels are addressed to hypocrites; the scribes and the Pharisees. Reading this exchange between Jesus and the Scribes in Luke 20 must make us examine our own faith: are we genuinely submitting to Jesus as Lord or rather just making a show of religion and continuing to be Lord ourselves. There is a stark warning for those who continue to ignore Jesus' Lordship and act in a falsely pious way.

Join us live every week for our Sunday evening service to praise God with music, talk to him in prayer and listen to his word explained.
